The seamless blending of sculpture and canvas, by Shintaro Ohata

Japanese artist Shintaro Ohata places sculptures in front of paintings, creating a unique 3-dimensional art. The figures are sculpted from polystyrene while the backgrounds are painted using traditional methods. The result is absolutely stunning and magical.

Skeletons, by Van Gogh

This skull with a burning cigarette was probably painted in the winter of 1885-86, when Van Gogh was in Antwerp. He went there from Nuenen in November 1885 and enrolled at the art academy in January 1886 to have the chance to paint and draw after the live model.  Students were allowed to study the live model after they had progressed from copying prints, and skeletons were often used to assist their learning of human anatomy.

The strict and obscure methods in the art school did not coincide with Van Gogh’s own ideas.

His teachers found his draftsmanship too crude, and he in turn referred to the fruits of his academic training as “damned boring.” He soon came into serious conflict with his teachers and, after only a few weeks, stopped attending classes altogether.

The skull drawing with a burning cigarette was probably meant as a joke and a commentary on the traditional academic practice. Another example of this “studio humor” is a hanging skeleton with a cat on a windowsill, also from Antwerp.
